Show me & Tell me
The Questions You'll Be Asked
After you have satisfied the driving examiner with the eye sight test of 20.5 metres.
The examiner will ask you to proceed to your car and open the bonnet for the show me tell me questions.
The driving examiner will have a set of 2 questions from a combination of 12.
You must correctly answer both questions otherwise each wrong answer will count as a minor mistake.
More importantly this gives a very bad impression before you've even started the vehicle.
The questions:
Q1) Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil.
Point to the dip stick and explain that you wipe the dip stick clean, dip it again and check that the oil level is between minimum and maximum.
Q2) Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check that the engine has the correct level.
Point to the coolant (water) reservoir and explain that the water should be between minimum and maximum.
Q3) Open the bonnet, identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check the windscreen washer level.
Point to the washer reservoir and explain that you check the level by opening the top and looking inside.(on some vehicles the washer reservoir has a dip stick).
Q4) Open the bonnet, identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.
Point to the brake fluid reservoir and explain that the fluid should be between minimum and maximum.
Q5) Show me how you would check that the direction indicators are working.
Turn on the hazard warning lights and walk around the car.
Q6) Show me how you would check that the brake lights are working on this car. (I can assist you, if you need to switch the ignition on, please don't start the engine).
Turn on the ignition (don’t start the engine) and press the foot brake pedal. The examiner will check the brake lights.
Q7) Show me / explain how you would check that the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey.
Start the engine and turn the steering wheel gentle from side to side. The steering should feel light and not heavy.
Q8) Show me how you would check the parking brake (hand brake) for excessive wear, make sure you keep safe control of the vehicle.
Press the foot brake to keep control and apply the hand brake firmly making sure it does not reach the top of its working travel.
Q9) Show me how you would check that the horn is working (off-road only).
Sound the horn once.
Q10) Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washer and wipers.
Turn on the ignition and operate the washer/wipers.
Q11) Show me how you would set the de-mister controls to clear all the windows effectively, this should include both front and rear screens.
Turn on the ignition, set the direction switch to windscreen and turn on the fan to the highest setting. For the rear window turn on the heated rear window (it may be necessary to start the engine for this).
Q12) Show me how you would switch on the rear fog light(s) and explain when you would use it/them (No need to exit vehicle).
Turn on the ignition, then the headlights and then the fog lights. A light will show on the dashboard if the fog light is on. Fog lights should only be used when visibility is less than 100 meters.
Q13) Show me how you switch your headlight from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know the main beam is on whilst inside the car.
Turn on the ignition then the headlights, pull or push (depending on the vehicle) the indicator switch. A blue light on the dashboard tells you that the main beam is on. Pull or push again to turn it off.

With engine turned off gently press the brake pedal repeatedly, the pedal should feel firm, not soft or spongy. Also shortly after moving off test the brakes, the car should not pull to one side.
Q15) Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how the tyre pressures should be checked.
The information can be found in the cars handbook. Tyre pressures should be checked when the tyres are cold using a suitable pressure gauge (e.g.: at a petrol station).
Q16) Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.
The height of the head restraint should be adjusted so that the top of the head restraint is not any lower than your eyes/ears.
Q17) Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.
Tyre tread should wear evenly across the width of the tyre and the depth must not be less than 1.6 millimeters. Depth guides are part of the tread/moulding, or a suitable gauge can be used.
